Nucleation mechanism of the σ-to-α phase transition in Fe1-xCrx

In this paper we report on the kinetics of the σ-to-α phase transition in the system Fe-Cr. The investigations were done by Mößbauer spectroscopy and interpreted in terms of the Johnson-Mehl-Avrami-Kolmogorov-theory. Apart from the time constant, also the Avrami exponent n varies systematically with temperature, allowing us to draw conclusions on changes in the transformation mechanism (mainly due to nucleation) as one approaches the critical temperature.
